Hypertension also known as high blood pressure is the state when blood pressure of a dog is higher than it’s normal range. Normal systolic pressure in dogs is 120-130 mmHg and is consider normal even upto 160 as an animal become anxious in hospital.

There are two types of bloog pressure:-

1. Systolic

2. Diastolic

1. Systolic

When heart contracts and release blood it exert maximum pressure on walls of arteries, it is known as systolic blood pressure. Normal range for it is 120-130 mmHg.

2. Diastolic

It is a stage when heart gets relaxed after releasing blood. It is the minimum pressure exerted on walls of arteries. Normal diastolic blood pressure is 90 mmHg or greater.

So when blood exert more pressure on walls of arteries than it’s normal range it is called high blood pressure or hypertension in dogs. There are two types of hypertension cases which are discussed here-under:-

1. Primary

When it is itself a disease it is called primary hypertension.

2. Secondary

When it is caused by another disease it is called secondary hypertension.

So when it is caused by another disease it is called secondary and when it is itself a disease it is called primary. There are several reasons behind this problem in dogs which are discussed here-under:-

Causes

There is no known reason or cause for primary hypertension in dogs, but the most trusted theory is this that it is due to genetic affect. A puppy whose parents were victim of this problem has higher chances to got struck by it. There less cases of this type of problem.

The most cases, almost 80% belongs to secondary hypertension. There are several reasons for it like renal disease, hormonal fluctuation etc. In rare cases diabetes is also responsible for it. Dog Obesity is also a possible reason for this.

So hypertension can be due to affect of parentage or it can be due to other illness. Next point which is important to discuss here is symptoms or signs, so lets discuss about them.

Symptoms Of Hypertension

There are several signs or symptoms that helps us to detect this problem in our dog. Some of them are discussed here-under:-

# The most popular symptom is sudden blindness.

# This also cause bleeding inside globe of eye.

# Excessive water intake and urinating.

# Blood in urine also known as hematuria.

# Heart murmur or abnormal rhythms of heart.

# Swollen or shrunken kidney

# Bleeding from the nose

Treatment

The blood pressure in dogs is meaured in same manner as in humans. Inflatable cuff is used at paw or tail of dog to measure the blood pressure. Some key points you should have in mind.

# Under 150 BP no treatment is required.

# 150-160 intervention is routinely not recommended at this stage.

# Above 160 treat should be focused to limit the organ damage.

# 180 or above need immidiate treatment to limit the damage of more severe complications.

If you see the bleeding from the eye or symptoms of kidney failure than dog needs to be hospitalized. Angiotension Converting Enzyme (ACE), inhibitors and calcium channel blockers are used to to control the hypertension in dogs. If we look at long term management than therapeutic nutrition is the key for it.

You can also work on lowering the weight if your dog is over-weight to cure his hypertention. Work to treat dog obesity and it will also help in treating hypertension.
